Why are Instagram shares missing from my ad performance data?

If Instagram shares are missing from your ad performance data, it’s likely because Meta doesn’t track or report shares the same way as likes or clicks. Here’s what’s happening and what you can do about it.

Why are Instagram shares missing from my ad performance data?

If you’re running ads on Instagram through Meta Ads Manager and notice that shares aren’t showing up in your performance metrics, it’s not a glitch, it’s by design. Meta, doesn’t always report shares the way it reports other metrics like likes, comments, or link clicks.

In fact, Instagram shares aren’t consistently available in Ads Manager reporting, and there are a few technical and platform-specific reasons for this.

Let’s explore why and what you can do about it.

Understanding How Instagram Handles Shares

Unlike likes and comments, shares are often treated as private interactions on Instagram. When someone shares an ad to their Story or DMs, that action is not always tracked or attributed back to your campaign in a visible way, especially not in standard reporting columns.

Common Reasons Instagram Shares Are Missing in Ad Reports

1. Shares Aren’t a Default Reporting Metric in Ads Manager

Meta Ads Manager focuses on trackable, outcome-based metrics like:

  • Impressions
  • Clicks
  • Conversions
  • Reach
  • CTR (Click-through rate)

Post shares, especially on Instagram, are not always surfaced unless you customize your reporting columns.

Fix:

  • In Ads Manager, click on Columns > Customize Columns
  • Search for and add “Post Shares” manually if available
  • Be aware: This metric may still not show if Meta doesn’t support share reporting for that placement

2. Instagram Stories Shares Are Private and Not Tracked

When users share your ad or post to their Instagram Stories, that share is not publicly visible and is not passed back to Ads Manager in a measurable way.

Why?

  • Instagram prioritizes user privacy in DMs and Stories
  • There’s no public-facing data to scrape or quantify

So while your ad may be getting shared, Meta won’t report those interactions, even if they’re helping your reach.

3. Organic Shares and Paid Shares Are Treated Separately

If you’re promoting a post that was originally published organically:

  • Organic shares will show in Instagram Insights, not Ads Manager
  • Paid shares (if trackable) may show separately—if at all

Fix:

  • Go to the post on Instagram
  • Tap View Insights directly to see organic-level shares
  • Combine this info with paid data for a full picture

4. Instagram API Limitations

Due to ongoing privacy updates (especially post-2022), Meta’s platform limits the type of interaction data third-party tools and Ads Manager can access.

Result:

  • Shares to DMs, private groups, or Stories are not passed back
  • Data may exist but is withheld for privacy compliance

Unfortunately, there is no fix for this, it’s a limitation built into the platform.

5. Ad Format or Placement Doesn’t Support Share Tracking

Not all ad formats or placements support tracking share activity:

  • Carousel Ads on Stories
  • Certain Reels placements
  • Click-to-Messenger Ads

Fix:

  • Stick to standard formats like single image/video in Feed for best data visibility
  • Monitor engagement more holistically (using Likes + Comments as indicators)

What You Can Do Instead

  • Add Post Shares to Custom Columns in Ads Manager (when available)
  • Check Instagram post insights for organic shares
  • Use other engagement metrics (like Saves or Comments) to measure virality
  • Encourage interaction via CTAs: “Share this with a friend…” or “Tag someone”
  • Focus on conversions or reach as your KPIs rather than shares

Real Example

One of our clients promoting a skincare product noticed high engagement but no shares in Ads Manager. Upon checking Instagram post insights directly, the post had been shared to Stories over 150 times organically, none of which showed in the ad report. The takeaway? You need both platform insights for a full picture.

Why Social Media Advertising Boosts App Downloads for Financial Applications

Financial applications are not selling a product. They are asking for trust. A prospective user is not handing over their email address. They are connecting their bank accounts, investment portfolios, and spending history to a platform they discovered through an ad. That changes everything about how the advertising must work. In 2026, social media advertising is the most reliable channel for financial apps to solve the trust problem at scale.

Why Shopify Portfolio Ads Drive More Purchases for Clothing Brands

Clothing is one of the most visually driven and purchase-competitive categories in e-commerce. A shopper browsing for a linen shirt, a midi dress, or a technical running jacket is not evaluating a single product in isolation. They are simultaneously being reached by dozens of brands competing for the same intent, the same screen real estate, and the same decision moment. In this environment, the clothing brands that win are not
